Michael Phelps signs golf endorsement contract with Ping, wait what?

Who would of thought we would see the day that Michael Phelps would sign a golf endorsement contract? Well it happened the most decorated Olympian of all time is taking his 22 medals to ping. The most notable name on Pings roster is 2012 masters champion Bubba Watson, but other players like Hunter Mahan and Lee Westwood are also signed with ping.

My question is, how did Nike let this one slip through their fingers? Nike was busy this off season taking tour pros from Titleist, signing 2012 Waste Management Open winner Kyle Stanley and 2012 Barclay’s winner Nick Watney. Lets not forget about the 20 million dollar a year contract they signed with world number 1 golfer Rory McIlroy (Too bad he couldn’t get the job done with the new Nike method putter in his bag and went back to his Scotty Cameron in Abu Dhabi). If Nike’s goal was to go after the big name players how did they let Phelps get by them? Now Michael Phelps is being featured on the new season of the Haney Project and played in the waste management open pro-am with ping clubs?

They are sweet though, I’d take them if Ping wants to send a set my way. USA all the way!

  1. I never would have thought that Michal Phelps would be a pro golfer. I guess we will see how it all turns out on the PGA tour. I do hope he does well. Don’t need are Olympians looking bad on TV.

    • He’s doing everything to get better and bring that handicap down from the 20 (I think) that its at now. Working with Hank Haney will definitely help him. He is an athlete and Bubba Watson said in an interview that with enough practice and time he could be a decent golfer.
